两人是爱尔兰小镇斯莱戈的高中生，康奈尔成长于清贫的单亲家庭，被年轻的母亲洛琳一手带大，与人和善，迎合一切；玛丽安成长于父权/男权至上的富裕家庭，父亲死后她依然活在哥哥艾伦的精神暴力之下，母亲丹妮斯又是个毫无作为的逃避主义者，校园刺头，目空一切。两人看似站在截然相反的对立面，却拥有着共同的性格底色：不外露的自卑。
