- The setting of this movie's source novel was changed from Yokohama, Japan to Dartmouth in Devon, England (where the picture was shot) for this filmed cinematic adaptation.
- First English language filmed adaptation of a novel by Japanese writer Yukio Mishima.
- The film was made and released about thirteen years after its source novel "Gogo no Eiko" by Yukio Mishima had been first published in 1963. The book was first translated into English by John Nathan about two years later in 1965 - around eleven years before this film.
