Ruth Cracknell

Ruth Cracknell was born on July 6, 1925 in Maitland, New South Wales, Australia as Ruth Winifred Cracknell. She was an actress, known for Mother and Son (1984), The Night, the Prowler (1978) and Lilian's Story (1996). She was married to Eric Phillips. She died on May 13, 2002 in Sydney, New South Wales.

  • Published her autobiography, A Biased Memoir, in 1997.
  • Educated at North Sydney Girls High School.
  • Her career began in radio in Sydney in 1945 and in 1948 she joined the John Alden Company and played in King Lear, Measure For Measure and The Tempest.
  • Three adult children, Anna, Jane and Jonathon.
  • In 1998 Ruth was named by the National Trust as one of the 100 Australia's Living National Treasures.
  • Published a second autobiographical book, entitled "Journey From Venice", beginning with the funeral of her husband, and detailing their last holiday together.
  • Appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 1980
  • Has honorary doctorates from the University of Sydney and Queensland University of Technology.
  • In 2001, she became the first woman to be inducted into the Logies Hall of Fame and was the only woman to be inducted for 15 more years until in 2016 when Noni Hazlehurst was inducted.
